Yandex announced the launch of its SourceCraft team development platform, positioning it as a revolutionary step in the evolution of DevOps tools. According to the company, the service combines AI-assistant, multi-language support and integration with cloud solutions, surpassing traditional platforms “like a car surpasses a horse”.
Yandex launches SourceCraft
Yandex's B2B Tech division has unveiled SourceCraft, a platform designed for collaborative software development. According to Forbes, the service already supports over 30 programming languages and includes CI/CD tools, intelligent navigation and a built-in AI assistant capable of generating code snippets.
SourceCraft is still available in beta mode, but in the near future it is planned to be integrated with the Yandex Cloud ecosystem. Free access will remain available only for basic functions, while advanced functionality will become paid.
“We made the product ourselves from scratch and even conducted the last stages of SourceCraft development on the platform itself. Now the solution is ready to be tested by external developers,” said project manager Dmitry Ivanov.
SourceCraft was first announced in September 2024 as part of the Yandex Cloud tools presentation.
SourceCraft vs GitHub: “The Next Level of DevOps”
Yandex calls the service a successor to GitHub and GitLab, but with a fundamentally new approach. “SourceCraft unites all stages of development in a single environment, solving the problems of scalability and speed of work with large codebases,” explained Sergey Berezhnoi, director of developer relations.
According to him, classic platforms are “stuck in the past”, failing to keep up with the growth of code volumes and complexity of tasks. “The development of modern tools, development tools and computing power sometimes does not keep up with this trend. Often everything slows down simply because no one could ever think that the code base of your project would be of such a size,” Berezhnoi added.
SourceCraft will run in on-premise mode, allowing companies to deploy it on their servers.
Market Opinions: Chances and Challenges
Experts recognize the product's potential. Ivan Panchenko, co-founder of Postgres Professional, believes that Yandex has serious expertise in AI and machine learning, which sets SourceCraft apart from local analogs.
However, as Touch Instinct Android developer Ilya Rybakov notes, the service will have to compete with familiar solutions, as teams are unlikely to quickly abandon proven platforms for a new product, even with advanced functionality.
Russian alternatives to GitHub: current landscape
After GitHub and GitLab were blocked for Russian users in 2022, local solutions appeared on the market:
- “Sphere” (T1),
- VK DevPlatform,
- GitVerse (Sberbank),
- RTK-Phoenix (Rostelecom),
- Gitee (a joint project of OSChina and 3Logic Group),
- Mos.Hub is another notable player: over the 10 years of its existence, the platform has accumulated 29 thousand projects and 180 million lines of code.
Bottom line
SourceCraft is positioned as a universal platform for DevOps teams, combining AI, flexibility and cloud integration. Whether Yandex will be able to reverse market trends, the coming months of testing will show. However, it is already clear: competition in the DevOps-tools segment has reached a new level.
